about

I saw it in Venice, 2001 or 2003, a cairn of terracotta bird bones and fossilized marine life. The word for it was, I believe, cupí (or similar?), an emptiness, a cup, a mound. The artist was South American, I think, but I can’t find them in the catalogue. I connected this life-like mound to the disused ship-building machinery outside in the sun and beside the river. Statelessness as a reality and as a feeling. There’s quite a list these days. Like, which artist gets ‘a pavilion’, which is based on their passport, which is another kind of sculpture. Furthermore, the rare earth element (REE) composition of bioapatite has long been used as a proxy for ancient seawater chemistry and paleomarine environmental reconstruction, based on the assumption of preservation of a hydrogenous (seawater-derived) REE signal. Recent work, however, has begun to question the provenance of REEs in conodonts, emphasizing the importance of REEs released by the lithogenous fraction of the sediment and subsequently adsorbed onto conodont apatite in the burial environment, which all came back, ten years later, as I walked in the shadow of the domed Sizewell B Power Station. Further south, random walkers had made their own cupí. I then connected this feeling to when we almost blew up Corsica Room 1 with a Polivoks, at a time when Jordan would test, in a live setting, the equipment he was supposed to have been paid to fixed. Eventually, I assembled my own.
